. reporting live in san francisco, cate caugurian, cbs 5. >>> and when do they start serving pretty quickly or -- what? >> reporter: yeah, actually the breakfast will start in just about an hour about 7:00. and then about two hours after that that's when the big lunch or dinner will get underway and then we'll see the lines, we'll see all the people out here again 650 volunteers are showing up and organizers tell me this is something that fills up every year within hours of them posting it online. >> thanks. >>> right now the salvation army volunteers are also busy preparing thousands of meals as well. >> yeah those meals will be delivered to seniors and people with illnesses that are home bound. volunteers started early this morning. this is at the central kitchen on harrison street in san francisco. they're preparing more than 4,000 meals and it a traditional christmas meal. complete with ham, yams, vegetables, hot chocolate, cookies and volunteers don't stop after cooking. they deliver the food, they walk it to people some spend some time with those who are alone today. >> people giving

years old and there's a big celebration designed to benefit every rider for the next 24 hours. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in the city to give us a little history lesson and tell us what is in store for all the folks that jump on board today. cate, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, frank. it's nice that it's muni's birthday and they're offering a present to the public. we're actually at geary and market, where the first muni line started 100 years ago and it ran from here downtown all the way to 33rd avenue. now, today the transit group serves 200 million passengers a year. muni has a network of 63 bus routes, a historic light rail system, streetcars and three cable car lines. now, before muni's existence, the city's public transit involved horse-drawn buggies. to celebrate the 100th birthday all of muni services including the cable cars will be free until 5 a.m. tomorrow. originally muni was going to charge riders five-cent fares because that was the fare 100 years ago but, no, they are going to give it to you for free today, which is nice. this isn't last time they will

driver has been missing for hours. cbs 5 reporter in ma rain county where an operation continues along corto madeira creek. good morning. >> officers and firefighters have suspended their search for the man who jumped into the ice say cold waters. they is a they're going to wait until daylight hours to get better visibility. the original search started around 1:00 this morning. officers tried to pull over the man on suspicion of drunk driving. during the investigation, the man jumped out of his car and ran a few blocks away. the suspect jumped a fence into a creek. officers say they tried to follow the man and tried to persuade him to get out. they called in multiple agencies to try and save the suspect. >> with the swift-moving water, we're concerned he could have gotten caught up in something or possibly have drowned. so we're very concerned for his safety. we hope he's okay. we currently have a swift water rescue boat from the fire department out going up creek and trying to locate him. >> reporter: the response included fire trucks from ross county, ma rain county as well as the s

:29. >>> we're following some breaking news in walnut creek. a suspect is dead after being shot by police. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is at police headquarters in walnut creek where they are going to give us an update at any time. >> reporter: th captain is here to give us an update on this officer-involved shooting. but here's a run down of what happened. earlier, we were told around 3:30 police got reports of shots fired near a home on creekside drive by las lomas high school. shortly after, officers got a 911 call of someone screaming on the line. now, we don't know who put in the call. the officers were able to respond within minutes. now, we're still unsure of the circumstances that led to the shooting but they were able to confirm some information. >> there is one suspect that is deceased. i will not release his name as of yet nor any other details. the scene is secure. and we are not looking for any outstanding suspects. >> reporter: we don't know how many shots were fired but no officers were hurt in the shooting. we know officers are at the scene gathering evidence. we are told it i

. live in san francisco, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >>> three members and one family died in a weekend fire in east san jose. a couple and their 4-year-old granddaughter were trapped on the upper floor. firefighters arrived in just minutes but the entire building was already engulfed in flames. >> this fire somehow got a really big head start on us. it burned hot and it burned very fast. it consumed most of the apartment even within a three minute response time for us. >> the two victims had lived in the complex for about 20 years. their granddaughter also died. and another family member was reported to be in intensive care. two other people suffered smoke inhalation including a san jose police officer who tried to help those victims. >>> a new health problem for secretary of state hillary clinton. she is in a hospital in new york this morning with a blood clot. her doctors discovered the clot yesterday in a follow-up exam following a concussion she suffered earlier this month. her spokesman says the clot is related to the concussion. but he is not saying where the clot is located. she is b
